BILL DIRKMAAT PROGRESS
MAY 18 TO PRESENT

An update on the condition of Bill Dirkmaat...I received the following message from Barb Dirkmaat this morning and am passing it on as Bill and Barb have requested. Bill H. (June 24, 2011)

Hello, It has been over three weeks since my last update. My intention was to send out updates every two weeks but it has been quite busy. I returned to work on May 31 and am working Monday, Tuesday, every other Wednesday and Saturdays. My office is only 10 minutes from Mary Free Bed so I am able to come here at lunch and after work. Dr. Ho suggested that I return to work while Bill is at Mary Free Bed and getting around the clock care. I will take the FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) once he is able to return home.

Today Bill is very tired. Apparently he did not sleep too well last night. He is resting while I type this update.

Some of the highlights over the past three weeks have been:

- Three weeks ago Bill went to the Farmer's Market with his Occupational Therapist (Jamie). It is on Wealthy St. across from MFB. Bill wheeled across in his power wheelchair with Jamie walking next to him. They just browsed and enjoyed the time outside.

- Bill was able to start feeding himself (with his left hand) about three weeks ago. The left wrist is sprained and he wears a splint on that but it is healing nicely. He only needs help cutting large pieces of meat, etc. He has also been able to wash his own face and hair for over two weeks now.

- He does very well operating his power chair considering the controls are on the left side.

- In Physical Therapy he has been doing weights with a pulley (left hand only) and is now up to 10 pounds. He also gets his legs exercised and stretched by the p.t. to keep the muscles in shape and prevent them from atrophying.

- In Occupational Therapy he is learning how to dress himself. Once he can use both arms it will be much easier.

- On Sunday, June 12th we were able to get a "day pass" for Bill so we could attend our niece Amanda's graduation open house. It was also his Father's birthday. Ambucab picked us up at Mary Free Bed at 2:00 and we were there by 2:30. They returned at 6:30 to bring us back. Bill's sister, Annette was here from Tennessee with her family. It was a very full day and we enjoyed seeing everyone. The weather was perfect, too.

- Wednesday, June 15th was our 26th wedding anniversary. I brought in two cakes (one cake was for the nursing staff) and ice cream so we could celebrate with family and friends. We had 30 people in the social room from 5 until 8. My friend, Cindy came early to help me set up for the party. She was a big help. My parents sent a beautiful arrangement of 12 long-stemmed red roses for the occasion. Everyone commented on how nice they were - they still look nice over a week later. We had a great time visiting with everyone. Thanks to all of you who stayed and helped us clean up afterwards. Bill slept very well that night.

- Thursday, June 16th Bill had an appointment with Dr. Kolodziej (his orthopedist). X-rays were taken of his right shoulder and left knee. Both are healing nicely. Instructions for no load-bearing with the right arm/shoulder for another month.

- Two weeks ago there was a peer group held in the social room. Dinner was ordered from Noodles and Company. Past patients of Mary Free Bed were here to share their experiences, what they are doing now and what the future holds for them. A question and answer period followed the presentation.

-Our dear friend Sheree was here from Kentucky for her grandson's graduation open house. She spent Sunday and Monday night at our house. While I was at work on Monday, Sheree was able to hang out with Bill and attend some of his therapies with him. She also did some weeding (cracks in the walkway and driveway) for me Monday before going to the hospital. I had no idea she was going to do that but I appreciated it very much.

- Yesterday a Wii bowling tournament was held in the social room. Meals were furnished from a local pizza and sub restaurant. Bill was in the last group of four to bowl. He had to bowl left handed - his score was a 95. Everyone enjoyed it immensely.

- This Saturday, June 25th from 10:00 a.m. until noon there is a motorcycle clinic at Mary Free Bed which will be held in the parking ramp. Bill is planning to attend.

- Bill has an appointment with his neurosurgeon (Dr. Klafeta) next Thursday, June 30th.

So far he has not regained any feeling from the breasts down. But we both feel that we are blessed with the fact that he is here physically and mentally. His attitude continues to be very positive and he rarely complains about anything. I think he has been a role model patient and has endeared himself to the staff at Mary Free Bed.

Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers. We feel very fortunate to have each of you in our lives.

With our Love and God's Blessings,
Barb and Bill

An update on the condition of Bill Dirkmaat....As most of you are now aware, Bill Dirkmaat was involved in a serious accident on May 18th. The following is from his wife Barb, I have talked with her a couple of times since the accident and she assures me that at this time their needs are being met by family and friends. I assured her that if there is anyting that the club members can do for them to contact me and I will pass the word. I visited Bill on Tuesday, May 31 and glad to report that he is looking good, sounding good and appreciates all the cards and well wishes but as Barb states below, he has a long haul ahead;

Bill's most serious injury was to his spine. The T5 vertebrae was fractured which crushed his spinal cord. He is fused from T2 to T8 to stabilize his spine. This will hopefully take the pressure off the spinal cord and allow the inflammation and swelling to subside. The neurosurgeon said there was significant damage to the cord and Bill has a 4% to 5% of walking again. Presently he is paralyzed from the chest down. The second most serious injury was a badly broken and dislocated right shoulder. The humerus (bone in upper arm) was jammed into the shoulder blade. It took the surgeons 30 minutes to dislodge the bone prior to doing the surgery. The fusion will take 6 to 12 months to heal and the shoulder 18 months. The left knee does not require surgery at this time - he has a brace with a hinge instead. But he is alive and can think clearly and talk so that is huge. Bill was moved Saturday morning, May 21st, to Mary Free Bed, 322-1. This was a big and tiring day for him. For the first two weeks we ask that only family visit since he will be working very hard with physical therapy and will want to rest whenever possible. After that visitors are certainly welcome but preferably between 4pm and 8pm. He has a long haul ahead of him but I am confident that with the excellent medical care and prayers and support from everyone that he will succeed. We hope that he beats the odds.

Club Members,
The following was received yesterday evening from Barb and Bill, please keep them both in your thoughts and prayers as they continue to deal with this tragedy.
Bill H.

Hello Bill and Joanne,
Could you please forward this to the other WMBMW members, and anyone else you think would like to have the update?

Bill has now been in Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital for one week - it has been 10 days since his accident and he has come a long way. He is now in room 322 bed 1 (previously was room 320). Every day gets better for him with all the excellent care he is receiving, plus all the caring thoughts and prayers of family and friends. The other night he told some friends that when he sees people in the Therapy Gym (where he receives physical therapy) who are in worse condition, he said "Knock on wood - I am truly blessed". According to Bill's social worker he will be there at least another 10 weeks. The best time to visit him is after 4:00 p.m. He has different therapy sessions throughout the day seven days a week.

He still has no feeling from the breasts down - and he may never regain that feeling - only time will tell. This has been a life-changing experience for both of us but I truly believe we are better persons because of it. Neither one of us will ever again take anything for granted. God has a plan for each of us - we never know what the next day brings. His shoulder will heal in time - the staples were removed today, as well as the staples from his spinal fusion. He is here both physically and mentally - and we are truly thankful for that.

We did receive a copy of the accident report two days ago. The other driver (a 19 year old girl) swerved to avoid a wheelbarrow that was in the far left travel lane. She lost control, did a 360 degree turn and came perpendicular to traffic, causing her car to collide with Bill's motorcycle. The front of his motorcycle actually struck the front passenger side of her car, which sent him flying off the bike through the air. He does remember the sound of the impact and blacked out after coming off the bike, then came to after hitting the pavement. People were all around him asking if he was okay. 911 was called and the ambulance was there within five minutes - taking him to St. Mary's Hospital. There are 3 or 4 witnesses listed on the report as well.

Please pray for the other driver - I know she was devastated. Bill remembers hearing a girl saying over and over "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry". It was an accident - we both realize that. The ultimate blame lies with the person who lost the wheelbarrow, creating the obstruction.

Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers. We appreciate each of you more than you will ever know. Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.

Sincerely, Barb and Bill

I received the following from Barb Dirkmaat yesterday afternoon. I'm not sure if it went to the mailing list for the club or not but just in case it didn't I felt that you would all be interested. To my knowledge this is the first time we have ever had a tragedy like this strike one of our members. I will be in touch with Barb this week and see if there is anything we can do as a club or individuals to assist them in coping with Bill's injuries.

This is from Barb Dirkmaat:

First of all, thank you so much for the very nice plant that Homer and Kathy Teitsma delivered to the hospital from the club. Bill could not have any flowers or plants in his room (as water breeds bacteria). That turned out fine - I kept it in the Family Lounge. Then it was taken with Bill to Mary Free Bed as they are allowed there.

The way the accident happened was: Bill was merging onto 131 Northbound at Market at about 12:30 on Wednesday 05/18/11. He noticed a wheelbarrow in the merging lane and realized he could merge past it. He checked for traffic and as he was accelerating a white car swerved (actually came at him at a 90 degree angle). I won't receive the accident report until Tuesday at the earliest. It's possible that the car was trying to avoid another object in the road which caused them to lose control or it may have all ready hit something else and lost control. I won't know until I see the report. They do have web cams in that area as well so maybe they can find out how the wheelbarrow got there. As many of you know, he was planning to leave for Burkesville, KY for a rally the next morning. If it had to happen I am grateful it happened here and not en route or in Burkesville. At least up here we both have a lot of family and friends for support.

Bill's most serious injury was to his spine. The T5 vertebrae was fractured which crushed the spinal cord. He is fused from T2 to T8 to stabilize the spine. This will hopefully take the pressure off the spinal cord and allow the inflammation and swelling to subside. The neurosurgeon said there was significant damage to the cord and Bill has a 4 to 5% chance of walking again. Presently he is paralyzed from the breasts down. He also said that Bill is lucky to be alive and that he does not have a brain injury. I told him it was due to the fact that he wears a full helmet with a full face shield along with other protective gear from head to toe. The second most serious injury was a badly broken and dislocated right shoulder. The humerus (bone in upper arm) was jammed into the shoulder blade. It took the surgeon 30 minutes to dislodge the bone prior to doing the surgery. The fusion will take 6 to 12 months to heal and the shoulder 18 months. The left knee does not require surgery at this time - he has a brace with a hinge instead. But he is alive and can think clearly and talk so that is huge.

While at St. Mary's I stayed over night in Bill's room on a very comfortable sleeper sofa. He received excellent care there as I know he will at Mary Free Bed.

Bill was moved Saturday morning to Mary Free Bed, room 320-1. This was a big and tiring day for him. For the first two weeks we ask that only family visit since he will be working very hard with physical therapy and will want to rest whenever possible. After that visitors are certainly welcome but preferably between 4 and 8 p.m. He has a long haul ahead of him but I am confident that with the excellent medical care and prayers and support from everyone that he will succeed. We hope that he beats the odds. My brother-in-law and I had a chance to meet with Dr. Ho (the head of Mary Free Bed) today as well. He is a very nice man and an even more dedicated doctor. He explained everything to our satisfaction and also encouraged any questions we may have. When I told him that I was taking an extended leave from work until Bill is better, he said I may want to work now as long as Bill is in good hands. Plus it will take my mind off of everything that is happening now. He will need me the most once he returns home. At that time Dr. Ho will fill out an FMLA (Family Leave Medical Act) for me. I am taking two weeks so that I can see what p.t. Bill is doing - I am allowed to attend his p.t. sessions with him. I can even spend the night whenever I want (not in Bill's room as I did at St. Mary's) but there are accomodations for family members who spend the night.

Thank you for your prayers and continued support! We need all the prayers we can get. I will continue to update you all regularly.

Sincerely,
Barb

A quick update, Homer Teitsmat stopped by the hospital today to see Bill. He was just there for a few minutes as Bill is in a lot of pain and very tired. Bill sustained a crushed spine, shoulder injury and a broken kneecap as well. The intent is to move him from St. Mary's to Mary Freebed this Saturday or Monday. If your intent was to visit him it may be better if you waited until after the first of next week, give him a little time to heal and recover from the trauma of the accident. Barb, his wife, spent Wednesday and Thursday night at the hospital and was hoping to get home tonight. His family is there with him.

Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they face the challeges that such an accident poses.

As of May 19, 2011

Just to inform you all, Bill was involved in a motorcycle accident yesterday about noon. As I understand it, he was on US 131 north bound near Market Ave. and a car swerved in front of him and he struck the car and was thrown from the bike. He substained some serious injuries to his back and shoulder and possibly a broken knee. Barb called me last night about 7:00PM and it sounded like he had been in surgery much of the time since he arrived at the hospital. He is at St. Mary's in Grand Rapids, he was not in a room yet when I spoke with her.

Please keep Bill in your thoughts and prayers, visit, if you can, or send him a card so he will know we care.

Thanks,

Bill Hankinson
